We scour the earth for used, clean, near-mint condition sweaters made of 100% wool. Once we find one we launder it meticulously in the hottest water we can squeeze from a tap. This begins the felting process; the threads of the weave grow tight, preventing fraying. Then we run the sweater through our dryer on HOT! HOT! HOT! It’s not magic, but it’s close.
Next we use a fancy razor to shave the shrunken garment. It is not unusual for a Men’s XL to look like a Girl’s M once we’re at the shaving phase.
Finally we cut and cut, and then we sew.
On to our inspectors, who are understanding people by night, terribly picky by day. They approve, fix or discard each item.
We’ve developed a process to make sweaters into sleeves in a quick, efficient manner. However, due to the nature of our product, manufacturing cupThreads is both science and art. Science in that we follow a pattern and process; art in that no two are exactly alike. And art makes life better.
Most of our corps of independently contracted artisans are stay-at-home-moms (one dad) and retired folks. They make our product great. They make cupThreads unique. Together, we believe that we produce the greatest, most responsible and most fashionable cup sleeve on the market. Our founder is so convinced he goes from coffee house to tea room (all hopped-up on caffeine, of course) to share our uber-functional art.
